Consulting with a social work focus for human service organizations.

Founded in 1991, Gary Bess Associates (GBA) is a thought partner, grant writer, and evaluator helping not-for-profit organizations and public agencies fulfill their missions and better serve their clients and communities. GBA’s principals are social work doctoral program graduates with a passion for serving underrepresented and underserved communities and instill a social work culture and focus within the organization, which includes customizing our consulting services to the specific needs of partner organizations.

GBA serves organizations across the nation, from Alaska to Florida and California to Massachusetts. GBA’s team of skilled professionals has a history of success in delivering customized consultation services ranging from strategic planning, community health assessments, client surveys, interviews and focus groups, GIS mapping and analysis, community health planning, and grant compliance/reporting. Each year, GBA secures more than $650 million in grants, contracts, and funding renewals for our partners.

We specialize in working with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) on new funding opportunities, compliance and outcome reporting, and on projects that would otherwise require short-term staff engagement. GBA helps new health centers from nonprofit applications to community clinic licensing, operational and policy compliance, FQHC Look-Alike and New Access Point applications, and preparing for the pre-designation operational site visit (OSV). Health centers receiving their FQHC Look-Alike continue their partnership with GBA for changes in scope, Federal Torts Claims Act (FTCA) deeming, Service Area Competitions (SAC) and Renewals of Designations, progress reporting and annual certifications, grant writing, and HRSA compliance. After 30+ years of service and a high partner retention rate, GBA has FQHC partners who have worked with us for decades.

In the program evaluation domain, GBA has developed a specialty in working with Native American communities to assess grant-funded programs and services.  GBA is a subcontractor to federal agencies, including Indian Health Services and the Agency for Native Americans, and GBA has prepared summative reports for presentation to Congress on the success of Native American programs in such areas as language restoration and integrative behavioral health care services.

GBA is also one of the leading experts in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the federally funded Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) program. Visit our sister website, CCBHC Support for information on the CCBHC program and the services we offer. Please visit the “Services” page, for a summary of common types of GBA partner projects.
